Twenty million years from now, with man long extinct, a species of intelligent bird "people" has arisen to fill the human niche. They live in agricultural settlements similar to the Fertile Crescent, about 2000 B.C. A tribe called the Rhia is betrayed and driven from their village into the wilderness of rat-predators, intelligent insects, giant toads, and other bizarre life forms.
