Tried By Fire
After a black Pentecostal church burns down, the white pastor of a conservative church tries to take sole credit when the churches merge in a racially polarized town.
Pastor Amos uses the tragedy to form a multi-cultural fellowship, to the consternation of some parishioners. Black pastor, Bishop Joe Woods, now without a place of worship, accepts pastor Amos’ invitation of ecclesiastical unity, against the counsel of some of his flock.
In an uneasy alliance of diverse people and worships styles, the congregations gradually learn to coexist, finding that they’re more alike than they were led to believe.
As the personal demons of both pastors are revealed, the merger is threatened. Bishop Woods, grieving over the abrupt death of his son, drowns his sorrows in the bottle and threatens to leave the ministry.
Pastor Amos takes sole credit for the creation of the largest multi-cultural congregation in the state and goes on a whirlwind speaking tour that nearly bankrupts the church.
When the united church building also burns down it takes sober and clear thinking by both pastors and the combined church leadership to hold the congregation together as they desperately search for a financier for a new church building.
After every bank turns them down, the pastors seek the help of a shrewd and wealthy local real estate developer who’s a segregationist. The developer agrees to finance a new building if the congregation can raise half of the money in two days.
If they fail to raise the money, the developer will take ownership of the valuable church land he covets. With no other options available, the pastors agree to his unreasonable challenge.
They launch a spirited fund drive that brings contributors from far and wide, but as time runs out, it takes supernatural intervention to meet the deadline.
A feature I wrote and will co-produce is in development.
In 1992, I wrote and co-produced a drama, "Dumped On," (about a thrill-seeking woman who reluctantly goes on a blind date with a church deacon after her player boyfriend dumps her) for Capital Cities/ABC that aired on its Philadelphia affiliate, WPVI (6ABC).
