Louis A. Runs Along

Louis has been sober for years until he hops a bus for vacation where he meets a woman who steals his heart, and eventually his sobriety. Note: This script is the first episode in what will be a series. It is based on my short story that was awarded honorable mention in the Oregon Writers Colony Competition and a semi-finalist in the New Millennium Competition.

Louis is the pride of his people. When he gave up his wild days of partying and drinking years earlier, he began working for the tribe, helping young people stay sober. But while on a much-needed vacation, he meets a raven-haired beauty who steals his heart. She is everything he has ever dreamed of; her Native American good looks and sense of humor draw him in. After hours of laughing and talking, learning she is on her way to New Orleans, Louis is certain she is the one for him.

When the bus stops for a dinner break at a small restaurant and bar, Marilyn, also known as More, asks if he would like to join her inside for a beer. Louis convinces himself that he can do it. He can take a drink of the devil juice, show this woman that he is willing to do anything she wants; so goes inside and orders a beer. More has other ideas, however, and orders tequila shooters to go along with the beers.

Soon, after several beers and a few shots, Louis can’t see straight and when the bus driver announces the bus will be leaving in five minutes, More suggests they get a bottle, take a room at the motel across the street, and leave in the morning. Like a love-stricken dog, Louis follows, unaware that More has made a call to a man in New Orleans, letting him know of her plans.

After a night of love-making and drinking, Louis wakes up to find More gone. He is heart-broken until he finds a note she left telling him something came up and she had to leave, but to join her in New Orleans; he can find her, she said, by asking her whereabouts at the Blue Goose Tavern. Since the bus to New Orleans doesn’t leave until midnight, Louis goes across the street to the liquor store to get a bottle. He will catch up with her later.
