Boomer Buddy

A family’s solution to an overbearing mom — hiring her a “Boomer Buddy”— backfires, as the service is actually a lethal con targeting the elderly. The family is forced into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with its murderous, cult-like leader in this dark comedy. *Scored an 8 on The Blacklist.

ACT ONE Scott Sands is a successful novelist, devoted husband, and overwhelmed father living in suburban Detroit. While juggling a movie adaptation of one of his books, he struggles to keep up with the constant demands of his widowed mother, Kathy. Since the death of Scott’s father, Kathy has become increasingly dependent on him for companionship, errands, tech support, and emotional support. Though Scott loves her, he feels stretched thin and guilty for treating her like another obligation on his endless to-do list.

After missing an important cemetery visit honoring his late father, Scott is forced to confront how lonely Kathy has become. Soon afterward, he and his wife Rachel discover Boomer Buddies, an exclusive service that provides companions for aging parents. Skeptical but desperate, they enroll Kathy and she is paired with Tyler, an enthusiastic young employee who quickly wins her over.

Tyler becomes deeply integrated into Kathy’s life, helping with everything from technology to funeral attendance. As Kathy thrives, Scott initially feels relieved—until he begins to feel replaced. Meanwhile, viewers glimpse the darker reality behind Boomer Buddies. The company is run by Gary Johansen, a charismatic businessman who is secretly Gregory Gooch, a notorious cult leader who vanished after a suspicious death in Honduras. Beneath Boomer Buddies’ wholesome image lies a sophisticated operation targeting vulnerable seniors and their assets.

ACT TWO As Tyler grows closer to Kathy, he begins uncovering disturbing aspects of Boomer Buddies’ training and business practices. Employees are encouraged to gather information about wills, accounts, beneficiaries, and estate plans.

Scott’s suspicions grow after discovering Gary's true identity. He reconnects with eccentric FBI agent Stingray Stevens, who reveals that federal authorities have spent years trying—and failing—to tie Gary to a nationwide pattern of elder fraud and murder.

Working together, Scott, Rachel, Tyler, Kathy, Stingray, and the FBI devise a risky sting operation. Kathy agrees to fake her own death, allowing Tyler to convince Gary that the fortune is within reach. While Kathy enjoys her secret “afterlife” on Mackinac Island with her family, Tyler plays a dangerous double game inside Gary’s organization, feeding evidence to investigators while keeping Gary convinced he remains loyal.

ACT THREE The FBI raids Boomer Buddies headquarters, only to discover Gary has vanished and dismantled the entire operation. Rather than flee completely, however, Gary’s ego proves to be his weakness. Convinced he can outsmart everyone, he walks directly into Kathy’s fake funeral to confront Tyler and reclaim control of the narrative.

At the funeral, Gary attempts to expose Tyler as a con artist and uses a kidnapped elderly client as leverage. For a moment, he appears to have regained the upper hand. But Tyler reveals that the fortune has been secured, the victim rescued, and Gary’s attempt to poison Kathy fully documented by the FBI.

With his scheme finally exposed, Gary is arrested and charged. Yet even then he manages to secure bail, cut off his ankle monitor, and escape the country. Six months later, he resurfaces in a new jungle commune under another identity, once again charming vulnerable followers into surrendering their lives and fortunes.

But Gary’s past finally catches up with him. Randy, the brother of the man who disappeared during Gary’s Honduran cult years, confronts him and kills him.

Back in Michigan, Scott’s relationship with Kathy has been transformed. No longer seeing her as a burden, he embraces the time they have together.
