Austin Fest Announces Panelists

Marsha Milam, co-founder of the Austin Film Festival (AFF), has announced that over 20 screenwriters are confirmed panelists for the annual Heart of Film Screenwriting Conference, running October 7-10 in Austin (see attached list). AFF is the nation’s leading screenwriter’s film festival, being the first in the nation to celebrate the writer’s contribution to filmmaking, and the only conference with immediate access to panelists and significant players in the industry.

Buck Henry, Shane Black, Bill Broyles, Ann Rapp, are but a few of Hollywood’s top screenwriters that will serve on the 55 panels, stretching over the four-day conference. This year’s Heart of Film Conference will have different panel tracks designed for new and advanced screenwriters. -- a craftroom will be geared to the new screenwriter, educating on the craft’s basics like structure and character development, while the advanced track will address the specific challenges facing the more experienced writer. Both levels of conference attendees will also have access to “round tables,” where they can sit and discuss issues in an intimate setting with panelists and other attendees.

One of the highlights of the conference will be when James L. Brooks receives the Distinguished Screenwriter’s Award, designed to recognize a writer whose contribution to the film industry exemplifies the creative potency that the writer represents to the filmmaking process. “James L. Brooks body of work is breathtaking,” commented AFF co-founder Barbara Morgan. “He is one the few who has shaped entertainment over the past 20 years with an entire body of work, starting in TV as a writer with The Mary Tyler Moore Show, conceived Taxi, and then transitioned powerfully to film as an Academy Award® winning writer/director, not to mention executive producing the current hit series The Simpson’s.”

In addition to receiving the award Mr. Brooks will be the featured guest on October 9 at the Paramount Theater in downtown Austin, where he will be fielding questions from the audience and talking in depth about the screenwriting craft as part of his tribute.
