Contest News

FilmMakers.com and The Radmin Company Announce 2003 Contest Winners

FilmMakers.com and The Radmin Company have announced the winners of the 2003 FilmMakers.com / The Radmin Company Screenwriting Competition. FilmMakers.com' 3rd annual screenplay competition attracted a total of 757 entries. Christian Parkes won first prize for his brilliant thriller, "MY BROTHER'S KEEPER". Christian is an aspiring screenwriter who has completed nine feature length scripts to date. Christian has moved twelve times in the past ten years (L.A., San Francisco, Yokohama, Tokyo) and currently calls Los Angeles his home.

"MY BROTHER'S KEEPER" is about a man who after being freed on a brilliant technicality, goes on a high profile killing spree in an attempt to disgrace the sleazy lawyer who set him free.

John Morby, Jr. of Farmington, Connecticut, won second prize for his Drama, "SANDMAN"; A self-hating, middle-aged simpleton is forced to take in his estranged, ill father, then, in an effort to band with him, enlists the aid of a rebellious boy to train for a triathlon.

In addition to having success in screenwriting contests, John wrote and directed the independent digital feature, "Tides". John's desire is to continue to generate material that reflects his view of life: there's humor, there's pain and we're all in this together, so let's share the laughter, trust the crying will strengthen us and most importantly, remember to open our hearts and let love bring us all closer together.

Born and raised in Connecticut, John possesses undergraduate and graduate degrees, but prides himself on being an entirely self-taught screenwriter. He structured his creative energy by scouring over books dedicated to the craft. Because we're ultimately a product of our experiences, John credits his upbringing and all the special, understanding people in his life for his passion to touch the lives of others through screenwriting.

Noelle C. Nelson of Malibu, California won third prize for her first screenplay, a fantasy entitled, "WHEN PIGS FLY"; 12 year old Brian escapes his abusive family to a Pegasus' fantastical realm, where learning the magic of belief, he returns to transform his world.

Born in Manhattan to a French mother and an American Dad, Noelle Nelson, at the ripe old age of six months, came to Southern California where she stills lives and thrives. Travel is a cherished pastime, which Noelle enjoys whenever her schedule permits. Other interests include voracious reading (mysteries and courtroom drama, of all things), Latin Jazz, and snorkeling wherever warm tropical waters are to be found.

Professionally speaking, "Dr. Noelle" is a clinical psychologist, author, speaker and trial consultant. She has written numerous personal growth books and articles. Her most recent book, "The Power of Appreciation: The Key to A Vibrant Life " (Beyond Words Publishing), will be released in Fall 2003. Noelle Nelson also writes and produces a widely aired 90-second daily radio program, "The Problem Solution Lady."

Whit Rummel of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, came in fourth for his psychological suspense, "THE SECRET BOY"; A young boy moves to a small town in Maine and discovers the house he lives in holds a terrible secret.

After graduating from film school in Boston, Whit began his career directing films and videos for corporate/industrial clients. Several years and hundreds of programs later, he sold his production company and moved to small-town life in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with his wife and son. He continues to do work for a limited number of corporate customers in Boston and LA but tries to spend most of his time writing.

Guy Barresi won fifth place for his Drama Mystery, "MAN OF CLAY"; A mining industry executive suddenly retires to chase a 'treasure' dreamy in the desert southwest with an older colleague and his grasping adult son.

Guy Barresi has been working as an Assistant Film Editor, sound effects designer and overall 'idea guy' in features films for 23 years. When he's between pictures he writes whenever possible. Originally an illustration student, Guy graduated from Syracuse University in 1980 with a degree in film. Soon after graduation he got his first feature film 'break' working in the cutting room on low-budget horror movies and he hasn't left film editing since. He has become a veteran Hollywood 'foot soldier' who has worked on 24 features.

Guy has been blessed to have worked with many talented people within features and is currently working on "The Mission" with Ron Howard. Guy has primarily been on his picture editorial staff since 1985. He has seen the whole spectrum of the feature business, budgets from two hundred thousand to one hundred million dollars. He has been been allowed to be wildly creative and also slogged it out in the trenches. Guy's been part of the boom times and suffer with everyone else when times are slow. He is married to a wonderful woman, Mary and has three great kids, Max, Olivia, and Emily.
