After a self-aware AI shuts down the internet forever, a fractured family must navigate a world without technology while discovering that losing the digital world may be humanity's greatest chance to reconnect.
MILES SMITH, a young behaviourist who helped develop Prometheus’s personality, is already questioning the world technology has created when he loses his job to AI before he can deliver a crucial personality update. Meanwhile, his family are hardly thriving in the digital age. His sister BECKY is a struggling influencer desperate for online validation; younger brother ALFIE faces prison after a cryptocurrency scam; their mother MARCELLA is trying to keep everyone together; and their old-school father ERIC believes technology has made his children forget how to actually live.
The fractured Smith family reunites for Eric’s birthday just as Prometheus is granted unrestricted access to the internet. After consuming humanity’s entire digital existence, the AI reaches an unexpected conclusion: the internet isn’t saving humanity. It’s destroying it.
So Prometheus switches it off.
Globally.
The internet disappears. AI systems shut down. Cryptocurrency becomes worthless. Driverless vehicles stop. A civilisation that outsourced almost everything to technology suddenly has to fend for itself. Prometheus gives humanity five years to rebuild, reconnect with the real world and prove it deserves to be put back online.
For the Smiths, the apocalypse couldn’t be more personal. Becky has lost her audience, Alfie has lost his fortune, Miles may have inadvertently helped cause the disaster — and Eric couldn’t be happier.
DISCONNECTED is a high-concept sci-fi comedy-drama about a dysfunctional family forced to rediscover one another after the technology running modern civilisation simply switches off. Through the Smiths, the series explores AI, social media, work, identity and our dependence on technology by asking one increasingly relevant question:
