Can U Love Me

Can U Love Me is a powerful and intimate story that speaks to the resilience of family, the pain of systemic failure, and the determination of a mother and son striving to transcend their circumstances. It serves as both a love letter to the strength of Black families and a critical reflection on the America that shapes—and often limits—their possibilities.

The screenplay begins with a joyous 2001 graduation celebration in Killeen, Texas, before flashing back to the early 1980s in Shreveport, Louisiana, where teenage pregnancies, intergenerational tensions, and economic hardship set the stage for Nicholas’s birth.

Raised by a single mother, Renee, and a fiercely proud grandmother, Vergie, Nicholas grows up surrounded by strong but struggling Black family members. The screenplay offers a raw and heartfelt look into the challenges Renee faces—abandoned by her child’s father, grappling with lost educational opportunities, and dealing with betrayal from within her own family.

The story charts Nicholas’s journey through an impoverished and racially segregated world. Scenes of gang violence, addiction, and systemic neglect are interwoven with deeply personal family moments: attempts by Renee to enroll Nicholas in a better school outside their zone; the tragic betrayal by his uncle who steals their possessions; the influence of father figures like his grandfather Earl; and Nicholas's exposure to gang culture through peers.

Despite the obstacles, Renee remains determined to give her son a better future, fighting for his education and stability with grit and fierce love. Nicholas’s own voice as the narrator reflects on the emotional legacy of his upbringing, hinting at the man he becomes and the enduring hope that emerges from struggle.
