Not Over Yet

Six young people may not escape the heinous crime they committed 10 years ago as children.

A small town in Florida, called Boynton, suffers the presence of a serial killer whose target-of-choice are mothers. Six 12-year-olds – three of whom have lost their mothers to the serial killer; the other three fearing their mothers will be next – believe they know who the serial killer is: the transient camping in the woods.

In the dead of night, the six children set fire to the camper's tent with him in it.

10 years later, one of the six criminal children, Billy, now 22 years old, has been suffering guilt. It has paralysed his life: he is unable to hold down a job, to have relationships and is regularly attending therapy session.

One night, when news breaks out that the authorities have finally captured the Boynton serial killer – a mail-delivery driver – Billy can longer outlive his guilt and commits suicide.

Then, untoward events begin to happen to the remaining five.

Tamara, aspiring to represent America in the Olympic Games as a wrestler, experiences life-threatening incidents. A car attempts to run her over. The boxing ring she trains on collapses. It gets worse. Leaving the gym one evening, an attempt is made to set her on fire. Later, she has a lucky escape when her bungalow explodes into flames.

Tamara survives the attempts on her life, but Perry, a drug addict – seeking highs as a way of coping with the killing of his mother 10 years ago – is burnt alive in his caravan.

Then follows the burning death of Marina in a supposed car accident, whose mother also was a victim of the Boynton serial killer.

Toby, Tamara and Doris, the sixth perpetrator (who, however, had backed out of the killing at the last moment), realise they are being targeted by the transient, whom they now believe escaped from the inflamed tent by rolling over into the lake.

Toby believes his company’s new all-encompassing AI Dragnet software – which taps into all the world’s CCTVs that are online and has a breakthrough facial recognition module that can accurately identify what a child looks like as an adult – is key to finding the revenge-motivated killer.

Working with Toby on the AI Dragnet project are Arty, Harrelson and Leisha. The question Toby is faced with is: how does the revenge killer know so much about him and the other five? It’s this question that leads him to the idea that the transient has recovered from the burns and 10 years later is working with a law enforcement agency, which has access to AI Dragnet and therefore the whereabouts of himself and his friends at any given time anywhere in the world where there are CCTVs.

For a moment, Toby suspects it may even be an employee in the software company. But when he does searches on AI Dragnet, he misreads a result – and possibly misses homing in on the “matchbox killer”.

As a last resort the three survivors, joined by Marina’s sister, 18-year-old Angelina, flea to a coastal village called Canitia. Since there are no CCTVs – thus out of reach of AI Dragnet – their hope is to start a new life.

However, when the fishing trawler Tamara and Toby are on is set ablaze, followed later by an attempt to set on fire their log cabin, it becomes obvious the revenge killer is in town.

Doris has a plan to trap the killer (“offence is the best defence”). It works and the killer is revealed to be Arty, Toby’s boss at the software company. Arty explains the transient was his father, who on the fateful night did escape by rolling out of the inflamed tent into the lake but was later eaten by alligators.

Via AI Dragnet’s facial recognition projection capability, Arty is able to identify the six 12-year-olds caught on CCTV crossing a road to enter the woods on the night of his father’s demise.

Arty did not act on his findings, believing his father was the Boynton serial killer. But when news breaks of the serial killer being caught – and realising his father was innocent – Arty begins his campaign of revenge.

At first, Arty attempts to kill Tamara by other means before he would attempt to kill her and the others by burning them alive as they had tried to burn his father alive. This becomes Arty’s M-O.

Arty is not sentenced to death for killing Perry and Marina and for the many attempted murders because the Floridian jury take pity on him for the manner in which he lost his father.

Tamara and Doris, who has become Canitia’s chemist, decide to remain at the coastal village. But Toby returns to his job at the software company and Angelina returns to her job as a waitress and to live with her father.

LATEST NEWS.

Yesterday (23 January 2025), I have completed a new screenplay titled: Not Over Yet. My feeling is this one has a lot going for it commercially. Though it has the least emotional involvement of any of my scripts, it is the most professionally written (to date).

I have now completed 14 scripts (13 screenplays and one pilot).

MY STORY AS A SCREENWRITER

I became a hobbyist screenwriter in 2007 when I purchased version 7 of Final Draft.
