Undue Influence

When the suicide of a financially distressed businessman triggers a federal investigation into a debt collection agency, a top-performing collector must confront her own role in a toxic system and decide whether exposing a far-reaching corruption scheme is worth losing everything she worked to obtain.

Sydney Franklin is a top collector at Alliance-Dominion Receivables Group, a Texas debt collection powerhouse whose culture rewards aggression, intimidation, and profit at all costs. Possessing exceptional talent and even greater ambition, Sydney consistently ranks among the company's highest earners. Her worldview is simple: debtors made choices and must live with the consequences. Everything changes when she contacts Daniel Davenport, a respected business owner whose finances are secretly imploding. During a heated call, Sydney threatens possible criminal consequences and attacks his professional reputation. Already overwhelmed by legal troubles and personal despair, Daniel spirals further into hopelessness and soon dies by suicide. The fallout is explosive. Daniel's widow files a multimillion-dollar lawsuit. Federal regulators launch investigations. Company executives begin looking for someone to blame. At first, Sydney views herself as an unfortunate victim of circumstances. But as she investigates Daniel's account and conversations surrounding the case, she uncovers evidence that ADRG's problems run far deeper than overly aggressive collection tactics. Malcolm Brooks, her manager and mentor, is orchestrating a sophisticated fraud operation involving altered recordings, unauthorized payment processing, inflated performance metrics, and systematic consumer abuse. As Sydney's life unravels, she finds support in Ellis Whitman, a compassionate quality analyst who sees the goodness buried beneath her hardened exterior. Their relationship forces Sydney to confront painful truths about herself, including unresolved guilt over her parents' deaths and the greed that has consumed her life. After Malcolm sacrifices her to protect himself, Sydney loses everything she spent years building. Yet losing everything becomes the catalyst for transformation. Working alongside former enemies, Sydney gathers evidence exposing ADRG's corruption. The revelations culminate in a dramatic confrontation where Malcolm and his co-conspirators are arrested by federal authorities. Though justice is served, Sydney understands that legal accountability cannot undo the damage inflicted upon Daniel Davenport and countless others. In an emotional final confrontation with Daniel's widow, she accepts responsibility for her role in a tragedy that forever changed multiple lives. By choosing honesty over ambition and redemption over wealth, Sydney begins a new chapter built not on profits, but on integrity.
