Contest News

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Joe Randazzo

An interview with screenwriter Joe Randazzo regarding the Terror Fest Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: "Ripper" is about a group of Ripperologists and the NYPD trying to catch a serial killer in modern day New York City, whose victims are butchered precisely the same way as the original 1888 victims in Whitechapel.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: I enter the Terror Film Festival with every horror script I write.

And yes, I've entered this script in several film festivals. It won Best Screenplay at Fright Night Film Festival in Louisville, the Oklahoma Horror Film Festival in Tulsa, it took 2nd Place at the International Horror/Sci-Fi Film Festival in Tempe, Arizona, 3rd Place at the LA Reel Film Festival, 2nd Place at the Indie Gathering, and a Merritt Award at the Los Angeles Cinema Festival.

It also was a finalist at the Beverly Hills Film Festival, the Swansea Bay Film Festival, the International Film Festival of Ireland, and a semi-finalist at the Eerie Horror Film Fest and Shriekfest.

Q: Were you satisfied with the administration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: I was perfectly satisfied, and they never promised an award, but it was cool to win.

Q: How long did it take you to write the script? Did you write an outline beforehand? How many drafts did you write?

A: The first draft only took me a few days to write.

Q: What kind of software did you use to write the script, if any? What other kinds of writing software do you use?

A: Final Draft is all I use.

Q: Do you write every day? How many hours per day?

A: I write when the mood hits. There is no set time.

Q: Do you ever get writer's block? If so, how do you deal with that?

A: All the time. I just write through it.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I have been writing scripts and scooping up awards for about 5 years now.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I currently live in New York, but I may very well be LA-bound very, very soon.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I am working on a script called "Three" that I hope to have on the market and in competitions in early 2011.
