To identify and encourage talented new screenwriters.

Deadline/Entry Fees

Expired. Previous Deadline: 05/01/2017

Notification: By August 1 for quarterfinalists. Near October 1 for winners.

Rules

No applicant may have earned more than $25,000 writing for film or television. Scripts should be in standard form, approximately 90-120 pages. Only PDF screenplays submitted through online application are accepted. Equal collaborations by exactly two writers are eligible. Adaptations of another person's work are not eligible, even if that work is in the public domain or if the entrant has acquired rights to the work.

Awards

Up to five $35,000 fellowships.

Prize includes plane ticket to Los Angeles and one week hotel accommodations for each out of town fellow; industry seminars; lunch with Nicholl Committee; Awards Ceremony & Live Read (of excerpts from winning screenplays).

Academy Announces Nicholl Fellowship Finalists

Finalists have been announced for the Academy Nicholl Fellowships In Screenwriting.

  • Josh Golden (Buffalo Grove, IL) - “Road to Oz”
  • Melissa Iqbal (London, United Kingdom) - “The Death Engine”
  • Ben Jacoby (New York, NY) - “Earthwalkers”
  • Duncan Samarasinghe (Dandenong, Australia) - “The Caretaker”
  • Ryan Trevino (Seal Beach, CA) and Robert Wolfe Dunn (Los Angeles, CA) - “Arcadia”

Scripts will now be read and judged by the Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee, which may award as many as five of the prestigious $35,000 fellowships. The winners will be announced in October.

The 2014 Academy Nicholl Fellowships will be presented on Thursday, November 13, at a ceremony and live read at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
