The shadowy echoes of the former Soviet empire linger as an American family embarks on the journey of managing a new resort hotel in Siberia. Hidden within the very walls of the hotel are secrets that have patiently awaited decades, eager to capture new souls and to discover their mysteries.
Despite the enticing offer, Vera is burdened by the weight of her family's history—her grandmother’s chilling tales of Soviet dominance during the Cold War and the tragic fate of her grandfather at the hands of the KGB. Reluctantly, she embarks on a journey to Siberia with Dolan and their 12-year-old daughter, Sheri, to oversee Russia's newly established resort hotel.
Upon arriving at the hotel, the Cranes encounter Igor, a young Russian whose demeanor does little to assuage Vera's deep-seated mistrust. After the guests and Igor depart for the winter, the family's first night alone is filled with unsettling sounds and haunting memories of the old Soviet prison system. Soon, they find themselves threatened by a KGB commander, a figure from Russia's shadowy past, long presumed to be dead.
Beyond the hotel walls, the remnants of Siberia’s largest penal colony loom ominously, a place once thought to be obliterated. The KGB commander, harboring sinister intentions that even the Soviet regime could not fathom, is determined to enslave Vera and her family. He recognizes that he needs the Cranes to execute his dark plans and escape the confines of the Lair of the Red Wolves.
In this dire situation, Vera must confront her ingrained fears and suspicions of all Russians to protect her loved ones. Ironically, her only potential ally in escaping the clutches of the penal colony’s commander is Igor, the very young man with whom she has clashed since their arrival at the hotel. Adding to her challenges, Vera must also contend with the brutal Russian winter, while Sheri forms an unexpected bond with a mysterious young girl who appears from the depths of the hotel's basement reading room.
