Austin Fest Confirms Additional Panelists

Marsha Milam, co-founder of the Austin Film Festival and Heart of Film Screenwriters Conference, today announced that David Cross, Larry Karaszewski, Tim McCanlies, Bob Odenkirk, Cindy Shupak, and Joseph Tropiano are confirmed as Conference panelists.

"This year's Conference is shaping up to be one of the best yet," stated Ms. Milam. "We have such a strong set of screenwriters and television writers, and screenwriters who started in TV, that our Conference attendees are going to have a great look at both disciplines and how they work hand-in-hand. Most importantly, we have an unparalleled lineup of award-winning screenwriters, directors, and producers something that we have never seen anyplace else."

The newly confirmed panelists are:

David Cross is a co-producer of Mr. Show, and Mr. Show's 1999 Emmy Award-nominee for Outstanding Writing, as well as an Emmy Award®-winning writer on the 1995 The Ben Stiller Show.

Tom Fontana is a writer and producer. In 2000, his new work First Thing Monday will be coming out.. He also wrote Firehouse in 1997. He is a producer of the cable TV series Oz, Firehouse, Prosecutors, and Homicide: Life on the Street.

Larry Karaszewski is a director and award-winning writer, perhaps best known as the screenwriter for People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), and Ed Wood (1994). Mr Karaszewksi's most current work includes: H.R. Pufnstuff (2000), and Foolproof (1999). His screenplay for People vs. Larry Flynt won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay-Motion Picture and the WGA's Paul Selvin Honorary Award, both in 1997.

Tim McCanlies is a Texas writer and director. His current work, Iron Giant, is being shown across the country to great reviews. In 1998, he wrote and directed Dancer Texas Pop. 81, as well as Dennis the Menace Strikes Again.

Bob Odenkirk is an Emmy Award-winning writer, director and producer. He won an Emmy Award for the 1995 The Ben Stiller Show, and, along with David Cross, created this year's Emmy Award nominated Mr. Show.

Cindy Shupak is also an Emmy Award-nominated writer with this year's Sex in the City, now showing on HBO.

Joseph Tropiano has the distinction of winning two Sundance Waldo Salt Screenwriting Awards back to back in 1996 and 1997, for Living in Oblivion and Big Night. Big Night also won the Independent Spirit Award in 1997.

The Screenwriter's Conference will consist of 55 panels, stretching over the four-day conference. This year¹s Heart of Film Conference will have different panel tracks designed for new and advanced screenwriters -- a Craft Room will be geared to the new screenwriter, educating on the craft¹s basics, while the Advanced Track will address the specific challenges facing the more experienced writer. Both levels of conference attendees will also have access to "round tables," where they can sit and discuss issues in an intimate setting with panelists and other attendees. AFF is the only conference with immediate access to panelists and significant players in the industry.

One of the highlights of the conference will be when James L. Brooks receives the Distinguished Screenwriter¹s Award, designed to recognize a writer whose contribution to the film industry exemplifies the creative potency that the writer represents to the filmmaking process. "James L. Brooks body of work is breathtaking," commented AFF co-founder Barbara Morgan. "He is one the few who has shaped entertainment over the past 20 years, with an entire body of work, starting in TV, as a writer with The Mary Tyler Moore Show, then conceived Taxi, and then transitioned powerfully to film as an Academy Award® winning writer/director, not to mention executive producing the current hit series The Simpson¹s."

In addition to receiving the award, Mr. Brooks will be the featured guest on October 9 at the Paramount Theater in downtown Austin, where a special tribute will be convened.

James L. Brooks joins Distinguished Screenwriter¹s Award alums Paul Schrader (AFFLICTION, TAXI DRIVER), Buck Henry (TO DIE FOR, THE GRADUATE), Bill Wittliff (LEGENDS OF THE FALL, LONESOME DOVE), and Horton Foote (TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL, TENDER MERCIES) in receiving the Bronze Award.

The Austin Film Festival and the four-day Heart of Film Screenwriting Conference run concurrently, October 7-14, with the Conference being held October 7-10. Conference registrations are still available, by calling 800-310-FEST or visiting www.austinfilmfestival.org.
