Austin Film Fest Semifinalist Opens in Theaters
The new Warner Brothers release, "Goodbye Lover," directed by Roland Joffe and starring Patricia Arquette, Ellen DeGeneres, Mary-Louise Parker, Dermot Mulroney and Don Johnson is the latest film to come out of the Austin Film Festival's Heart of Film Screenplay Competition. Scribe Ron Peer submitted the script to the competition in 1995 where it advanced to the semifinalist level. The script was forwarded to the development executives and production companies in both L.A. and N.Y. who were taking part in the judging process. Peer attended the '95 Heart of Film Screenwriters Conference where he met executives from Gotham Entertainment, judges who had expressed an interest in his script. "Goodbye Lover" was optioned immediately following the festival and opens today, April 15. "We are proud to have played a part in launching a new writer's career, and are excited to see the final product," said competition director Jana Brockman. "Excess Baggage" was the winning script in the festival's 1994 competition which was optioned by Columbia Pictures then President of Production Barry Josephson, who attended the festival as a competition judge and panelist. The film stars Alicia Silverstone. "Natural Selection", a semifinalist in the 1996 competition is in the final stages of post-production and stars David Carradine, Michael Bowen, Darren Burrows and Stephen Root. The Austin Film Festival's 6th annual Heart of Film Screenplay Competition deadline is May 15. For more information call 1-800-310-FEST or visit the AFF web site at www.austinfilmfestival.org.
