Contest News

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Kerry Kent

An interview with screenwriter Kerry Kent regarding the Worldfest - Houston Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: I-17 is the title and it won best Drama. It is a dark, character driven drama. It is one day in the life of a desperate mother, Sarah. Sarah is determined to save her infant son from his ruthless father. As Sarah travels North on Arizona's I-17 freeway, she chooses a mysterious stranger to help save her and her son. But the stranger soon discovers that Sarah's plan for her new life is not what it seems.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: This was my first contest I entered with I-17 and I chose it for the exposure and reputation it has in the industry.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: Worldfest Houston was great. I went to Houston for the week and could not have been happier with it. The activities and award dinner were incredible. All of the people that helped with the festival really had a a passion for film.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: No formal feedback was received.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: This contest along with others I have won with my other works has really opened doors. I have a lot of interest in my portfolio of work and my works are currently being considered by companies. It's a long process to match a specific screenplay with a company interested and capable of bringing it to the next level.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I am a self taught writer and I have written 6 full length screenplays ranging from action/thrillers to dramas. I have multiple contests and festivals to my credit with my works. I like to enter a work as soon as I finish it so I can evaluate the feedback and the current market for my types of work.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I do not live in Los Angeles. I realize my career could probably move a little faster if I was there, but the great thing about writing is you can do it anywhere!

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I continue to market my works and I have several scripts I am working on at this time. It works best for me to write multiple stories, because they feed off of each other and each makes the other stronger.
