Contest News

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Joe Kisch

An interview with screenwriter Joe Kisch regarding the FilmMakers Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: Swimming Against the Currents is a historical drama detailing the most important and pivotal period in electrical science in the late nineteenth century where two famous and influential men - Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla - battled for public supremacy in the knowledge the outcome would ultimately affect every single future human life.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: Filmmakers International purported to have access to a large audience of producers and directors. I have entered the script in the Bare Bones International Scriptwriting contest and made the top 20.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: Yes; they met all their award promises. The administration of the contest was very good.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: Unfortunately, I was not given any feedback, although I knew this wasn't offered in the first place.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: The win (I came second in the Drama genre) did allow me some kudos to list the scripot on Inktip and I have received some interest but none that have wanted to read the script.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I work in the Civil Service writing policy papers on social welfare issues. I have written four other screenplays, one of which I am currently having script edited. I have also written a dozen or so short film scripts (having come in the top 20 in Project Greenlight Australia and first in a local competition). I have been filming a few of my scripts and reached finals stage in the Canberra Regional Film Festival last year.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I live in Australia and would like to move there if it would help promote my film.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I am developing my script, Taunton, a story about a boy, Jack, who is placed into a boys' home where he heals boys of their scars, not realising that he is the most scarred of them all and believes he has to protect his brother when all the while he had actually drowned and is dead.
