Contest News

BluCat's Gordy Hoffman Announces Contest Winners

I am pleased to announce a very special update at www.bluecatscreenplay.com -our annual interview with our winner. And what a script this woman wrote!

In DUST, Sherie Yang, winner of the second BlueCat Screenplay Competition, displays an incredibly mature level of craft and control of emotional pace. In her interview, Sherie relates her writer’s journey, and discusses how she arrived at the emotional and spiritual place to produce such an outstanding effort.

DUST, the story of a teenage Chinese girl sold into prostitution in late-19th Century Los Angeles, is brutally honest and gloriously inspiring. An untold story, at it’s core uniquely American, DUST fulfills the promise cinema extends to us, a promise so rarely met.

It’s the best script I’ve read, by far, in a long time. Thanks so much for entering, Sherie.

NOTE: DUST recently placed fourth at Slamdance.

Wanna read DUST? Contact Sherie at 1-800-222-6000 (Mailbox # 213-626-001) or sherieyang@yahoo.com.

Our other three finalists (very picky at BlueCat) are movies in their own right:

TRY THE NUTS by Arzhang Kamarei is a wonderfully chaotic romantic hilarity set in modern day Manhattan, tracing the confusions and victories of the heart. The superb timing of the humor in this script is something you never see--a very valuable property. I HATE to say I wish I wrote it. Perfectly funny and sweetly romantic. Contact Arzhang arzhang.kamarei@gs.com or 212-727-3872

ROACHES 666 by Stu Woolley, an apocalyptic, profane loony tune of a script, which, in my opinion, out-Malcoviches BEING JOHN MALCOVICH by a nuclear bomb or two, follows the bizarre adventures of sweet, hapless Veronica as she tries to make it in the big city. I laughed out loud on page two! (This never happens.) Contact Stu at golddog@kingston.net or 613-542-4933,

THE WIZARD JOE by Tony Urgo follows the oddly magical life of Joe, a regal figure of an idyllic medieval kingdom. This script creates a world so breathtaking and magical, I could only shake my head when the screenplay took a turn you only find in, I don’t know, a handful of screenplays. A must read. Contact Tony at anagram@san.rr.com or 858-485-0296,

We are currently accepting entries for our third BlueCat Screenplay Competition. The winner now receives $4000. We work directly with our winner and finalist by querying the agencies, management and production companies on their behalf, plus yearlong internet and industry exposure.

We also call ALL applicants to the BlueCat with feedback on their script. No other competition does this!! We accept up to TWO screenplays per entry fee, and our entry fee is only $20. Please visit www.bluecatscreenplay.com for complete details, or send a SASE to BlueCat, P.O. Box 2630, Hollywood, CA 90028.

If you like, you can call me at 323-871-8098.

The BlueCat Screenplay Competition is committed to serving the writers who enter our competition. Help us do this by spreading the word.

Sincerely, Gordy Hoffman
