For over thirty years, Austin Film Festival’s annual Script Competitions serve as a launchpad, providing emerging talent with meaningful opportunities, mentorship, and real access. With one of the most noteworthy competitions among Hollywood tastemakers, AFF’s Competitions has a rich history of connecting creatives with industry leaders and fostering meaningful opportunities for writers at all stages of their career.

Eligibility
Open to writers who do not currently earn their primary income writing for television or film.Rules

Awards range from $500-$5000 per winner. Winners also receive reimbursement of roundtrip airfare (up to $500, excluding frequent flyer miles); hotel reimbursement at the Film Festival (up to $500); and the AFF Bronze Typewriter Award.

Austin Fest Names Screenplay Winners
The Austin Film Festival (AFF) has announced their 2016 Screenplay Competition Winners. All award recipients will receive an array of cash prizes, reimbursement of travel expenses, and industry access and recognition.
For the 2016 Screenplay Competition, a record number of 9,100 scripts were received and the finalists were reviewed by an industry panel of judges including Kim Bass (writer In Living Color; Sister, Sister, Kenan & Kel; writer/director Kill Speed, Day of Days (2016)); Stephen Falk (creator/executive producer/showrunner You're The Worst; co-executive producer Orange is the New Black, Weeds); Michael McCullers (writer Saturday Night Live, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Austin Powers in Goldmember; writer/director Baby Mama); Ashley Miller (writer Thor, X-Men: First Class, Power Rangers (2016), Big Trouble in Little China; writer/producer Fringe, Black Sails); Nicole Perlman (writer Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel (2019), Pokémon (2018)); and Oren Uziel (writer/director Shimmer Lake; writer 22 Jump Street, Freaks of Nature, The God Particle), among others.
The following winners were selected:
- Drama Screenplay Award presented by the Writers Guild of America, East: Static by Henry Jones
- Comedy Screenplay Award presented by Sony Pictures Animation: Dinner with Friends by Geeta Malik
- Sci-Fi Screenplay Award: Static by Henry Jones
- Enderby Entertainment Award: Static by Henry Jones
- Vertigo Entertainment Horror Award: Rock Point Draw by Jeremy David Lee
- AMC One-Hour Pilot Award: The Devil and the Deep by Kyle Bugg
- Sitcom Pilot Award: Losing It by Louise Rozett
- Short Screenplay Award: Futurehealth by Sarah Polhaus
- Scripted Digital Series Award presented by New Form Digital: Main Stream by JC Conklin
- One-Hour Spec Award: Fargo: The Hunt for the Cobra King by Sarah Beckett
- Sitcom Spec Award: Broad City: Short Term Effort by Greg Wayne
STATIC has been acquired by Inkubate, the new banner for Godzilla's Max Borenstein focused on character-driven genre material in film and television. Inkubate plans to package the script and then pursue setting it up at a studio or with independent financing. STATIC is described as a grounded, visionary sci-fi thriller. The logline is being kept under wraps.
