Heart of Film Conference Confirms New Panelists
September 20, 1999: Austin, Texas -- Marsha Milam, co-founder of The Austin Film Festival today announced ten new confirmed panelists for the Heart of Film Screenwriters Conference, October 7-10. The new panelists will be joining an already stellar lineup of the industry's best talent -- James L. Brooks, Robert Altman, Buck Henry, Shane Black, Scott Frank, and many more.
"Our comedy panelists and comedy screenplays are really outstanding this year, " commented Milam. We have not only the industry's heavy weights, but also the hottest talent in TV. The '99 AFF will have a special focus on comedy with two panels on writing comedy and two comedy roundtables."
The ten new panelists are:
Barry Blaustein & David Sheffield: comedy writing partners that started out at Saturday Night Live writing sketches with Eddie Murphy and went on to pen Murphy's films Coming to America, Boomerang, and The Nutty Professor. Currently writing a screenplay for Brian Glazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment.
Jon Cohen: His first screenplay Minority Report is being directed by Stephen Spielberg, starring Tom Cruise. His second screenplay Riptide is being developed by Kopelson Entertainment.
Steve Franks: His first screenplay was this year's hit Big Daddy, starring Adam Sandler.
Johnny Hardwick: Nominated for a 1999 Emmy for his work on King of the Hill as an "Outstanding Animated Program," Hardwick is the voice of the beloved "Dale." Hardwick and AFF Panelist Jim Dauterive share this Emmy nomination.
Nick Kazan: Returning for his third year at the Conference, Kazan's current work includes Bicentennial Man. Kazan is best known as the 1991 Academy Award® and Golden Globe nominee for Reversal of Fortune, starring Glen Close and Jeremy Irons. He also was named Screenwriter of the Year in 1991 by ShoWest.
Ron Peer: Ron Peer's screenplay was a finalist in 1996 at the Heart of Film Screenwriters Conference. His screenplay was made into Goodbye Lover, starring Ellen Degeneres, Patricia Arquette, Dermot Mulroney, Mary-Louise Parker and Don Johnson.
Robin Swicord: Writer and producer Robin Swicord will also be returning for her third year. She wrote and produced last year's Practical Magic, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. Her most current screenplay is Thing of Beauty, which she will also be directing.. Swicord is also well known for writing and producing Little Women, Matilda, and Perez.
John Scott Shepherd: Has written and sold two novels for screenplay adaptations. He has two feature films coming out Life or Something Like It and The Kill Martin Club.
Clark Walker: Writer, actor, producer, Clark Walker is best known for the screenplay Newton Boys, starring Matthew McConaughey, Skeet Ulrich, and Ethan Hawke.
The Screenwriters Conference will stretch over the four-day period, October 7-10. This year¹s Heart of Film Conference will have different panel tracks designed for new and advanced screenwriters -- a
Craft Room will be geared to the new screenwriter, educating on the craft¹s basics, while the Advanced Track will address the specific challenges facing the more experienced writer. Both levels of conference attendees will also have access to "round tables," where they can sit and discuss issues in an intimate setting with panelists and other attendees. AFF is the only conference with immediate access to panelists and significant players in the industry.
One of the highlights of the conference will be when James L. Brooks receives the Distinguished Screenwriter¹s Award, designed to recognize a writer whose contribution to the film industry exemplifies the creative potency that the writer represents to the filmmaking process.
"James L. Brooks¹ body of work is breathtaking," commented AFF co-founder Barbara Morgan. "He is one of the few who has shaped entertainment over the past 20 years; with an entire body of work, starting in TV, as a writer with The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Brooks then conceived Taxi, and transitioned powerfully to
film as an Academy Award® winning writer/director, not to mention executive producing the current hit series The Simpson¹s."
James L. Brooks joins Distinguished Screenwriter¹s Award alumni Paul Schrader (AFFLICTION, TAXI DRIVER), Buck Henry (TO DIE FOR, THE GRADUATE), Bill Wittliff (LEGENDS OF THE FALL, LONESOME DOVE), and Horton Foote (TRIP TO BOUNTIFUL, TENDER MERCIES) in receiving the Bronze Award.
The Austin Film Festival and the four-day Heart of Film Screenwriting Conference run concurrently, October 7-14, with the Conference being held October 7-10. Advance conference registration is still available, by calling 800-310-FEST or visiting www.austinfilmfestival.org.
