Contest News
WriteMovies.com Celebrates International Writing Contest Winners
WriteMovies.com experienced a very successful turnout for a reception celebrating the winners of its recent international writing and short film contests, held at The Lot, (Warner Hollywood Studios), on October 8, 2002.
The reception for the winners as well as the top ten participants started at 6 P.M. at the studio commissary and went on till well past midnight.
“Contestants flew in from all over the US as well as France, Germany, Switzerland, England, Austria and Guadeloupe, putting us firmly on the map as THE global venue for writers and filmmakers,” said Alex Ross, President of WriteMovies.com. “Our guests munched on prawns, crab cakes and all sorts of international delicacies, sipped fine wine and chatted with Academy nominated Hollywood players.”
The guest of honor was Niki Marvin, the producer of The Shawshank Redemption.
Jeff Dixon was the $2000 grand prizewinner for his horror/thriller, Dermis (staged in the eerie world of tattoo collectors). Dixon was offered representation for his script with personal requests for copies from Jon Landau (Titanic) and Joel Simon (Wild, Wild West, X-Men) and other top execs at Castle Rock, New Regency, and Kennedy/Marshall etc. He also picked up a copy of Final Draft and Richard Stefanik's, Megahit Movies.
Second place went to Jimmy Shea for Chat Room, another thriller with cybersex as the backdrop. Third place goes to Cornelia Kempf and her novel, Die Gaerten Von Damaskus (The Gardens of Damascus), a dramatic love story about an enslaved German nobleman and an Arabian Princess set during the Crusades (slated for a screenplay adaptation).
Second and third place winners will have their projects submitted to production companies, studios and agencies and also received a free copy of the Final Draft software and Stefanik's book.
Other top 10 finalists included Justin Brewer's, The Whale Room (4), William Carey's, The Twenty Nothings (5), Fred Gene's, L'Illumine De La Pleine Lune (6), Eric Anderson's, Accidental J (7), Melinda Mullin's, Gas, Knife, Pills (8), Bettina Szrama's, Die Geistheilerin (9) and 10th place went to Muni Leykauf's, Nun. (See the WriteMovies.com website for a full listing of finalists and semi-finalists).
Carolyn Miller picked up a check for $500 for her short film, Yo, Tyronne, and several producers and agents have requested a spin of her reel. Second place went to: Arnault Labaronne, (France) for Appel d’Air. Third place to: Eugene Grobler, (Great Britain) for Close Encounter. WriteMovies.com is submitting copies of the films to agencies and producers world wide, to help these directors secure a feature deal.
Attendees at the reception included producer Niki Marvin (Shawshank Redemption), Peter Saphier (Scarface, Deer Hunter, Lost in Space), Fred Kuehnert (Buddy Holly Story, Beneath Loch Ness), Bob Sobhani (Zide/Perry), Patrick Ewald (Crystal Sky), Alan Grodin (Weissman, Wolf, Grodin Attorneys), Sandra Prassel (Intertainer), Johannes Schlichting (Constantine), Barbara Alexander (Media Artists), Lynn Hacking (Final Draft), Nadine Hamdan (Film Stew), Julio Sobral (Fox) etc.
Writers and directors flew in from all over the US as well as France, Germany, Switzerland, Guadeloupe and Austria.
The next contest closes Oct 31. See the WriteMovies.com website for details.
“The main objective of the company is to help open doors for up and coming screenwriters and directors often missed or ignored by Hollywood,” says WriteMovies.com president Alex Ross. “The goal is to provide a richer entertainment experience for all of us by offering new perspectives,” he adds.
Via management, writing contests, script analysis, and other writing services, WriteMovies.com is the only international film making site to operate in six languages and effectively reach out to writers and film makers all over the world.
One board member, Tom Craig, Senior Executive VP at Universal Studios, responsible for such pictures as Shakespeare in Love says, "WriteMovies.com has an experienced staff that helps you tailor your project to give it the best possible chance of landing on the desk of potential buyers. I recommend WriteMovies very highly".
