Screenwriter Interviews

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Anna Nicholas

An interview with screenwriter Anna Nicholas regarding the Red Inkworks Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: LIBERTY OR DEATH is a drama set in the mid-twenty-first century. The set up is that the Bill of Rights has been suspended to facilitate the War on Terrorism. It's an act of treason to protest this event. The story is about one man's quest to find meaning in his life, and act on his convictions. His interactions with two traitors force him to examine his soul. On another level, the script is about the responsibility each individual has to preserve freedom.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: I entered Red Inkworks 2004 competition because I had heard the feedback they give is great. I wasn't disappointed. LIBERTY OR DEATH made semi-finals last year. I took all of Larry Myle's great suggestions as I revised. This year I ended up in second place. I've entered this screenplay in about eight other contests. It has made semi-finals in several of them.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: Yes, on all counts. This is a very professionally- run competition.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: Yes, the feedback is specific and detailed. It's easy to translate it into changes in your script.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: I don't know yet. It's only been a few days, so we'll see.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I've published many stories, articles, and poems, but this is my first screenplay. I've been working on it for nearly three years. I do have some ideas for other scripts.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: No, I live in the Midwest. I have no plans to move.

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: Right now I'm working on writing the LIBERTY OR DEATH story as a stage play. I find it challenging to work with the differences in the two forms. I've also got another script in the outline-index cards stage.
