Contest News

MovieBytes Interview:
Screenwriter Robert Gately

An interview with screenwriter Robert Gately regarding the Fade In Writing Competition.

Q: What's the title of the script you entered in this contest, and what's it about?

A: The title of the screeplay is HAT TRICK and it's about two cranky old men who help their friend atone for a fumble made a long time ago during the NFL championship game by performing the Full Monty forty years later on the football field during the Super Bowl game.

Q: What made you enter this particular contest? Have you entered any other contests with this script? If so, how did you do?

A: Fade In was the first contest I ever entered, and yes, I have won with HAT TRICK in other competitions. In fact, this script is the second 'winningest' comedy script on moviebytes.com currently and the 6th overall winningest script based on Moviebytes recent newsletter. It has won the comedy category in Fade In, Woods Hole Festival and Telluride ("WINNER"), and was second in Breckenridge and Pocono Mountain Film Festivals, and was a semi-finalist in the following competitions: American Theatre (La Jolla), Barrier Magazine, New Play Project (Backdoor Th.), scriptrep.com, Winner Take All, WriteMovies.com, Chesterfield (for screenplay and stage), American Screenwriting (flatshoe), **Screenplay Festival (still active). The stage play version came in fifth place in the Writer’s Network competition and the script made it into some quarterfinal finishes as well.

Q: Were you satisfied with the adminstration of the contest? Did they meet their deadlines? Did you receive all the awards that were promised?

A: Yes.

Q: Were you given any feedback on your script? If so, did you find the feedback helpful?

A: Yes. They did a coverage on it. I received an 8. Not bad. I used it to make rewrites.

Q: Has your success in this contest helped you market your script? Were you contacted by any agents, managers or producers?

A: Yes. I have a few non-mainstream producers and agents looking at it. No mainstream people though, at least not yet.

Q: What's your background? Have you written any other screenplays or television scripts?

A: I have been writing all my life even though I worked a full career as a telecommunications manager for the telephone company. Since 1998, I have written 8 screenplays, two stage plays and a novel.

Q: Do you live in Los Angeles? If not, do you have any plans to move there?

A: I live in Bethlehem, PA, and, yes, I would move to LA if my writing career mustard enough interest (and dollars).

Q: What's next? Are you working on a new script?

A: I am working on the life story of a man who has been acting/directing stage for over 40 years. He's a high school friend of mine that I have recently re-acquainted myself with since 9/11.
