Hi. I'm new here, and to this world, and would love some help from savvy veterans. Entered my first script in StoryPros and incredibly, it made the Semis. Was thinking of entering Big Break. I've read a bunch of nastiness about it here but the posts are old. Any advice? Thanks, Linda
Thanks, Marjory. Might be worth a shot. Ya never know.
Huge congrats! Total inspiration to see a little guy make it to the big time. We all hope to be there with you soon!
Hi there, I was wondering if any knew whether Page was going to let people know if they passed the first round. I noticed that last year a notification went out June 30. Did that happen? Just curious. Hoping there's still a chance!
Thanks, June. So helpful. There's still hope!
Timothy--thanks for the info as well. Didn't mean to overlook you!
Tim--you are too sweet! Thanks for the encouragement. I'm new to this game so any little jolt of goodness helps. I made the semis of Storypros last month which was a shocker so I just keep tweaking and revising--and hoping. Do you have one in Page?
Some good news. Don't despair if you received the email from Page last night about "this is for those of you who didn't make it to round 2". Just read a post from Zoe that the email went to everyone on the database--a pre-emptive strike of sorts. Confused everyone. Real notification is Friday, July 8th. We live to see another day... Good luck to all.
I made it through! Yippeeeeeeeee. Congrats all! Also just found out I made the Quarters of Just Effin Entertain Me. It's a good night for The Outliers. Breathe.
Hey Irin, Saw yours, too. Congrats! Julie wrote such a glowing post about you this week. You're ascendant. So great. Linda aka Lana
A little tidbit to share. Zoe from PAGE just posted that all tallying is complete and Quarter-finalist emails are being sent by early afternoon PST (West Coast). Good luck all!
Made it through with The Outliers. Congrats fellow MB-ers! I'm in a happy state of shock right now.
It's clenched ever-so-gently between my teeth... thx!
I'm thinking of going to the Expo in Sept. but really know nothing firsthand. If any of you have thoughts/advice, I'd love to hear. Was it useful to you? Waste of time? Good for meeting contacts? Good seminars? Clues for the clueless welcome. Thanks!
Thanks for the insight, guys. Still on the fence. I'll track the airfares for a bit and then pull the trigger--or not.
I'm loving Three Lines or Less right now. The logline for my screenplay The Outliers is a top 5 finalist for July--and I just got my first script request from a production company out of it. Very psyched. Only $10 to enter, good prizes, and EXPOSURE to industry peeps. Worth a shot. I'm glad I did it.
Made it in CWA! Softens the blow of not making it through to the PAGE Semi's. Would have been nice. Only 2 of the 25 sci-fi semifinalists are women. Next year!
Didn't make it through. Big congrats to those who did!
Congrats to you, too, Marjory. Your name is right after mine in CWA prelims. Good luck!
Excellent detective work, Athena! That's a win for all of us. Thanks for keeping people honest.
I think our last worry should be rankling the contest powers-that-be. If Athena wants to poke around and find flagrant rule-violators, more power to her. It helps all of us. The contests need to be put on notice that this is a problem and to take it seriously. If it spooks them, so be it. And, the whole point of these contests is that they are for non-professionals trying to break in. If Michael wants to go up against the big boys, groovy, but contests are not the appropriate venue. Just my two cents.
Oops. Sorry Michael. Should have said James.
Valerie had asked on another thread if anyone knew the deal with Expo notification. I was wondering the same thing. It said that results will be posted "by about Aug 18th" but then the entry form said email notification. Any veterans know the deal on this one? I've read here that they're pretty lax about things in general.
Thanks, Irin. I had already entered when I found out about last year's debacle. May even have been your thread... Hoping that they get their act together this year. Would be nice.
You've morphed from ScriptDude to ScriptSage... Very thoughtful posts. Appreciated.
The quarters are posted. Made it through. Anyone else? Good luck!
Eek. Looks like we're all in the same category! MBers going mano a mano. Mine is sci-fi: The Outliers. Maybe it'll be an MB sweep... And Irin, thanks, you're always so supportive!
That's an eye opener. Did you guys receive any feedback on your scripts from Expo? I didn't. This contest just doesn't smell right!
Those paragraphs were definitely NOT on the website when I entered in July. They would have struck me as very odd. I've sent an email trying to get clarification on the feedback issue. I'll let you know if I ever hear back.
Has anyone out there received feedback?
Has anyone heard yet? I gather that letters are imminent unless they're swept up in Hurricane Irene. Saw on Facebook that entries were up from 4400 to 5800. Yikes.
Hey Guys. Update on feedback issue. The word is that basic feedback will go out after the competition is over. Appreciated the quick response from Expo but still have a niggling sense that we'll never quite know for sure if our scripts were read. Caveat emptor. I think I'll pass on this one next year.
Thanks, Matt. As this is new to me, I wasn't sure if they dribbled out the letters the last week of Aug or what. Just curious about what to expect (or not!). They seem sweetly old school about notifications.
We're one baby step closer... Our little pack of MB horror/thriller writers made it through to the Semis. Congrats Val, Steve, and Marjory! Nice news for a post-hurricane Monday morning.
Right. Mine is actually sci-fi and it got through: The Outliers. When I joined MB, I picked an alternate identity. Didn't notice that everyone was using their real names! And congrats to Matt.
Here's the word from a poster on Done Deal Pro: It's kind of a unique notification procedure. If I remember correctly from last year, at about the same time (very end of August / very beginning of September), (1) postal letters are mailed to those whose scripts did not advance at all; (2) postal letters are mailed to those whose scripts advanced to the Second Round (Top 10%), but failed to go any further; and (3) phone calls are made to those whose scripts advanced to the Semifinals and are still alive in the competition.
Made it through to the Second Round. Nuked in the Semi's. Anyone else? Wish they left a moment to bask in a second round glow.
I did the Blue Cat early submission deal in June and had lightning fast turnaround. They actually came through on time! More than that, my two readers rocked--they had in-depth, thoughtful, dead-on comments. Helped me look at a few scenes in a new way. Nothing but good to say here. Maybe I lucked out.
Does anyone have any experience with this contest? I can't find anything on it beyond their site. Thanks.
Guess I got two articulate sci-fi nerds that work cheap.
I made the Second Round but my letter is a no-show. Anyone on the East coast?
I second that emotion. Super congrats all around! Really great showing. Wish I could make the Festival. My letter finally arrived and I appreciated the little note, even if he did scrawl a version of it on 500 letters...
Hi Michael. Congrats. I received my second round letter a few days ago and I'm on the East coast.
Way to represent. Congrats, guys! I got nuked this round but it was a fun ride. Good luck!!
Such a rip-off for you guys. It's just pure evil. So sorry.
Would any of you consider pasting some of this info into the contest comments? I know that's where I look to see if a contest is on the up and up. If people miss the thread and it's not in the comments, these shysters just keep getting away with it. Just a thought...
Would some kind soul please paste in the link? I can't find the list on their site! Thanks!
Thanks, Phillip. It's a bummer that they hacked so deep on the first cut. Looks like in years past there were 200 quarter finalists.
Congrats, Irin! Anyone else?
I demand a re-count! Not really but come on, that's a HUGE difference and it just hurts the little guys trying to make it. Throw us a bone already.
I recognized a bunch of names. Congrats all! Good showings all around lately. Mine got nuked but did manage to squeak into the Just Effin' Semis this week--it's funny how you never know with this contest thing. C'est la vie.
Irin, thanks for taking the time to share your experience and wisdom. Most of us are blundering through this maze trying to find a way in. It really helps to hear a good war story to keep morale up.
Did you meet Gordy at Benny's Burritos??? :)
I don't rightly know. I just looked at their site and there you were as a finalist. Congrats! What do you think of the contest so far?
I had no idea they posted this week!So thrilled I made it through and congrats Marjory K! The Outliers and The Precipice seem to be Siamese twins lately.
Did I miss anyone else?? Toot your horns people, it alerts those of us asleep at the wheel... ~Linda
Phew. Scared me for a minute. I had only heard good things about Cynosure thus far.
That is tragic, Valerie! Ugh.
I was wondering--have any of you guys (Irin maybe?) done Gordy's screenwriting seminar? He's coming to Boston so I was considering it.
Thanks, Irin. That's helpful to hear.
Just despicable. I wonder--did any of you pay by credit card? Maybe you could get your money back that way. This contest clearly did not fulfill its obligation to you guys. I always pay my entry fee with my American Express because they're so good about refunding money from evil-doers. Just a thought. Good luck.
Eric--I like your spin on the logline. Cleaner, tighter and I get the feel right off. Fab.
Have any of the veterans listed a script with Inktip? Did you get any good reads/leads?
I just made my first finals (Just Effing Entertain Me Comp) and have had some good results in other contests so I think it may be time to start pro-actively marketing.
Any thoughts/ideas/strategies from writers in the trenches on how best to do that would be greatly appreciated. Are you doing query letters?
Great story, TJ. Congrats. I guess nothing ventured, nothing gained applies. I'll give InkTip a shot and see what happens. My shorts might have a better chance so thanks for the heads up on that Marjory. That helps sweeten the deal.
I had no idea. Thanks for the tip. I'll try that.
Mine hasn't shown up either. I just sent them an email. Thanks for the heads up, Valerie.
Hey Valerie-- Just got mine. Took Portia a couple of days. My judge was tough but fair. Good luck.
I'm hoping they'll follow through with this year's contest and not just slip out in the dark of night. Quarters are slated to be announced today but no word yet. Here's hoping... ~Linda
Congrats, Margie. Great work!
Great story, Athena. What a bonus. I'm fresh off of my first win this week, Just Effing Entertain Me in Sci-Fi, and would love a phone call like that. I'll be thinking of your story as I lug out the Christmas decorations this week. Good luck! ~Linda
Thanks, guys. So heartening that everyone cheers for each other.
If any of you have a moment to share any advice on how to capitalize on that first win, I'd love to hear. I bet you veteran winners have much to share. ~Linda
Thanks all for your thoughts. Let the querying begin. Especially like tip about the title of the email. Smart. Cheers.
Mark, you are an action hero! Awesome work.
Since all newbies look at the contest comments, please consider re-posting this newsflash there. It may just cut off the blood supply to these leeches. FBI involvement is fairly frightening.
I didn't know all of this scuttlebutt and entered this year. Wish I had known.
So sorry you and Irin were ripped off. Bad karma. You two shall be rewarded.
Congrats, Bruce and James! Glad to be in good company. Making the next round in a competition is always a great way to kick off the day. Hope we get a nice X-mas surprise on the 20th...
Linda aka Lana
Great interview, Marjory! You seem to be on a serious roll with your film. Wow. Is there any way for us to see it? ~Linda
Does anyone know anything firsthand about this one? There's very little in the contest comments. Too many shysters floating around to take a blind leap. Just wondering. Thanks.
Jim, buddy, send up a flare. I wrote a book eons ago about how to be a great waitress and one of my biggest points was that you can get away with virtually any mistake or delay if you just LET the customer know what's happening. Humans are basically decent. Being kept in the dark is what makes them go ballistic. Just my two cents. Cheers.
Thanks, Jim! Seems like a Herculean task to get this all together. Could you give us a clue as to the number of feature entries this year? Most appreciated.
Thanks, Alex. Here's hoping that your name appears on the list in the next few days. And you're right--The Outliers is mine. Congrats all around.
Congrats and thanks for the heads up, Susan! I would have totally missed it and The Outliers is on the list. I had this one down for an April announcement. Oops.
This is a great way to cap off the day. Sent my script off for my first two production/management company read requests today. May not go anywhere but it felt like a positive step into 2012.
Also, a shout out to Irin--saw his name on the Vail Film Fest Shorts List. Nice job.
Anyone else we need to cheer on???
Hi All. Does anyone know when the next round will be announced? I can't seem to find the info anywhere. Thanks!
I made it in with a new short, Wrong Turn. I know, I need a new title. I was in a rush and didn't realize. Oops. ~Linda
And of course, BIG congrats all around. Onward and upward, MBer's!
Thanks, Athena and Irin. So nice. I was really happy to see The Outliers listed.
And these days, I just expect to see Irin's name on those lists...
Anyone else we need to congratulate???
Congrats, Paul. Glad it went your way.
Hey, Irin. Question for you. I saw a bunch of your loglines featured on the Home page. Did you do the Pro subscription here? Good results? Just curious since I need to get into the marketing phase. Thanks!
Awesome job, Margie! Sent a little note on DDP but that was before I actually watched the short. Totally riveting. Absolutely fired on all cylinders. You had some stellar actors. Just great.
Emailed Champion about the Semi-final announcements and Jim said that he's hoping to make them by this weekend. Here's hoping. Good luck everyone!
Go Patricia! Saw your name second on the list. Mine is second to last for The Outliers. Mine is Sci-Fi thriller. What genre are you?
Very excited for the Lab. Have any MB'ers gone to the Champion lab in the past? Thoughts?
Thanks, Margie. And Patricia, I'm hoping to go to the Lab, too. It would be fun to meet up. I definitely need to hang out with some people that do this crazy thing we do!
Big congrats! Really great to hear. The scripts are features?
There is a great thread at donedealpro on this exact topic: http://messageboard.donedealpro.com/boards/showthread.php?t=66056
Worth checking out.
Greg Beal, Director of Nicholl, comments a bunch of times. His is a font of info and everyone to a man agrees that Nicholl is the top contest.
That is such a tease! Have they responded to anyone yet??
Just sent them an email and it went through. Maybe that's a good sign...
It's up. I got nuked but big congrats to Margie and Paul! That was a deep cut. Anyone else through?
I didn't make it through to the Semi's either but I was really impressed with the contest overall. I know there has been scuttlebutt about the readers but mine were great--articulate, smart, and insightful Not sure sci-fi is BlueCat's cup o' tea but it was worth a shot. Congrats to the MBer's that advanced!
Fear not, fellow contest newbie. I emailed Scriptvamp yesterday to see where my feedback was and they responded with a personal note and the extension news. I mentioned that people were talking about re-submitting but I hadn't even received my notes. Hope I didn't cause the extension!
I had heard this was a good contest, too, so we shall see. This year I'm going to vet competitions a bit more. Since screenwriting was a brave new world to me, I wanted as much feedback as possible. It has been a great ride on a steep learning curve!
Still waiting for Jim Mercurio to release the hounds. He said he would announce winners last week but no word yet. If anyone has insider info, please enlighten us.
Congrats, Paul, Margie, Timothy, et al!! Such great news. MBer's are taking over!
The Outliers made it through in Horror/Thriller. Margie and I going mano a mano again! Congrats and good luck to all. Great MBer showing in this one.
Hey, Paul. It's all still a big win. Congrats.
Have you ever looked into the Kairos Prize? I think your script might be perfect with the God theme. And it's huge money. Heather H on here won buckets o' cash in it. Might be worth a stab.
I haven't heard a word or received an email.I hope he lets us know soon!
I think Jim Mercurio is a stand up guy just disorganized. It has been super-frustrating not getting timely updates and announcements but I'm really hoping he comes through soon.
And Paul, as a former English major, I have the same "feel badly" pet peeve. Everyone in my family says it--highly educated people to boot. I was so thrilled when Nora Ephron came out with her book "I feel bad about my neck". It didn't help. Most people just assume she got it wrong. Wrong has become right. Whatcha gonna do?
I feel ya, Bobbette, but you must read the book. It's genius and care you will. So much richer and more textured. I chose to read it for a third time for a novel pacing course I was taking and I really came to appreciate Suzanne Collins' abilities.
Wow! Congrats, Margie. Your roll just continues to pick up speed. My internal map of the US is very hazy but I'm pretty sure that Kansas City is out reach this weekend...
Maybe you could send us the link if you film it. Have a great night!
Was thrilled to see that The Outliers was the "Honorable Mention Winner" in both Action/adv and Sci-Fi. It's a lofty euphemism for 2nd place but I'll take it! Bought my MacBook Air today so I hope a few shekels will come out of it...
And Paul, you're on a roll. Raise a glass. Good things are coming. Clink. -Linda aka Lana
Thanks, Paul. Yup, I was was 2nd in 2 categories. I'd trade two seconds for a first --- but it's all great news. Forward movement. Slouching toward Bethlehem, er, Hollywood.
When I first started this ride a year ago, I didn't know if people used their real names on here so I picked a nom de plume. Confusing, I know. I am in fact, Linda Haltmaier.
That cracked me up, Paul. Let's write a comedy someday...
And Paul---Thanks for my little gem. You are a wise and learned man. No definitive word yet on cash and prizes but I expect the truck to be backing up to my house any day now.
I'll keep you posted on leads, too. Must finish this new script. Gotta keep writing...
Thank you, Jesus! Been a loooooong wait. Good luck!
Hey Paul, old buddy, old friend,
You are totally free to do what works for you but it seems like you've been nipping at the crazy juice--just a little. And I mean that in the nicest way. You are so fired up about your script and all that has happened recently--it's contagious in a good, non-scabies way. I love your gusto.
And, I DO hope that you'll consider letting this deadline stuff go--make it work for you. Play the game. PAGE is a stellar competition and they are good people-- not scammers. That is verifiable.
Just my two cents. Direct that passion toward your writing and magic will continue to happen... Best.
Congrats all! Just realized that made it through in Sci-fi. I must have been looking at some funky list that had no categories this am-- and I wasn't on it. Was bothered by it all morning so I just found the link on donedealpro and voila!
Good luck to all of you who are clearly far more intelligent than I...
Hey Paul, Really like Nomad but #1 worked for me, too. Nice selection. Good luck! And fingers crossed for StoryPro Finals tomorrow. I'll be looking for ya!
You are too kind. My dreams were dashed with Champion Top 3 yesterday. So close to the big dreams, yet so far. Would love StoryPros to buoy my drooping spirit.
Must say that "Something Wicked This Way Comes" was my favorite book title of all time (poor Ray, he's now among the angels) and your first choice hearkened back to that for me. But you must feed the beast-- your ever-lovin' public. Just saying. You have good title sensibilities. I may be calling on you... Much luck tomorrow.
Congrats, Paul! Your roll continues. Nice way to kick off a weekend. Get that champagne on ice. I keep a bottle chilling at all times. Just in case...
Not a woman to be found in the Sci-Fi category. Sigh. StoryPros was the first competition I entered The Outliers in last year when it was in its most crude form--and it made the Semis. Kinda hoped after a year of revising and polishing that it might do a tad better. Ya just never know.
Onward and upward. To finishing this current script. Rooting for you and the other MBer's!
Congrats to you, Philip. I keep seeing you on the short lists. Gotta feel good!
Woohoooo! Congrats, Paul!!! Great news!
Thanks, Paul. Really looking forward to the Champion Lab.
And Patricia, I'll be there for the Aug 14-17 section, too. Coming in from Boston. It will be so great to finally meet a flesh and blood MB'er!
Made it through! Kudos all around! Onward and upward...
Belated congrats, Paul! So close to that crispy lettuce... I've been down and out after some surgery so I'm just catching up on MB news. Double congrats on PAGE--and all the other MB'ers--such a great showing. Hope to see the same smattering of names next month!
Nary a word. Got my cool certificates and cash but no requests. Seems odd that there hasn't been a nibble on any of our scintillating scripts... We may need to check in with Scriptvamp.
Congrats, Margie! Anyone else??
No love for moi, sadly. Seems that a bunch of PAGE quarter finalists didn't make the cut in Scriptapalooza this year.
And on to Nicholl any moment now...
That's really interesting, Robert. I entered early, too! Missed the deadline last year so I decided to get in asap. Huh.
And so sorry, Paul! I'm still waiting for my poison pen letter...
Paul, dear sweet Paul, you are delusional. That is an amazing Nicholl result! You must crack open the bubbly or ripple or whatever immediately. Remove dagger and pat back until raw. Congrats!
For perspective, I got no PS at all. Nada. Keep checking just to be sure... Sob.
Now that's a PS I can take to the bank. Smooch.
CWA announced early and I had no clue! Made the prelims. Soothes the sting of recent hits. Any other MB'ers?? Hope so. Didn't have a chance to scour the lists.
Awesome as always, Margie! Be fun to see what happens as a result.
Looking forward to it! Anyone else? Doing the mid-week session.
Congrats to you, too, Margie! Still surprising to see so few women in the Thriller/Horror category. Count maybe 15--but I know I can count on seeing your name there...
Congrats all around!
Thanks guys and congrats all around! Thanks to you especially, Paul. It has been a much better week than last! At the Champion Lab this week for intensive screenwriting workshop so just up for air. Really great.
Congrats! Paul, this strikes me as hilarious after your last thread. Final Draft rules! Right?
Maybe you contenders can enlighten me here. I thought I was feeling pretty good when my script scored a 9.14 but it only made it to the Quarters.
Did you guys kill it with scores in the 9+ range?
Awww. Paul, I will happily hitch my star to yours any day. And Underdog was my favorite cartoon after all...
Sorry to hear that, Patricia! You deserve a break. Still waiting for my letter here on the East Coast. Anyone else get theirs?
I'll add to the chorus of congrats! Big kudos, guys!
Yahoooooooo! Way to go, Paul!!! I've been MIA for a while but had to come out of my cave for this one. Thought this contest would be a good fit for you. So happy for you! On to the money round...
P.S. Paul--In NYC this weekend. Around for coffee??
Holy Trifecta, Margie!!! 3 comedies in the CWA finals. What have you been drinking??? Big congrats to Paul, too! Great stuff.
Holy unbelievable!!! Gigantic congrats to you, Paul! So fun to see your name shining at the top of the heap. Prizes, fame, glory. You are on a serious roll, mon ami. So happy for you.
Thrilled for you, Paul! Such exciting stuff. You give great hope to the guppies! Linda
