Objective
Each year, the Academy Nicholl screenwriting competition awards up to five $35,000 fellowships to amateur screenwriters. To enter, submit a feature length screenplay and entry fee via the online application when the competition is open for submissions. Fellowship winners are invited to participate in awards week ceremonies and seminars, receive individualized Academy member mentorship and are expected to complete at least one original feature film screenplay during their Fellowship year.Deadline/Entry Fees
Deadline | Date Days till: |
Entry Fee |
---|---|---|
Early | March 1, 2024 | $50 |
Regular | April 1, 2024 | $70 |
Late | May 1, 2024 8 |
$120 |
NEW FOR 2024: A maximum number of 5,500 entries will be accepted. The competition will close to applications once the maximum number of applications are submitted or the final deadline is reached—whichever occurs first. See website for details.
Notification: All entrants will receive notification of their status by e-mail sent by early August of each year. Quarterfinalist letters are e-mailed by early August. Semifinalist letters are e-mailed by early September.
Rules
No applicant may have earned more than $25,000 writing for film or television. Scripts should be in standard form, approximately 90-120 pages. Only PDF screenplays submitted through online application are accepted. Equal collaborations by exactly two writers are eligible. Adaptations of another person's work are not eligible, even if that work is in the public domain or if the entrant has acquired rights to the work.
Please see website for complete rules and guidelines.
Awards
Up to five $35,000 fellowships are awarded annually. Fellowship recipients are expected to complete at least one original feature film screenplay during the fellowship year. Fellowship payments are subject to satisfactory progress of the recipient’s work, as judged by the Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee. Up to five fellowship recipients are selected from approximately 10-15 finalists in the competition. The winners are invited to participate in awards week activities.
The Academy reserves the right to grant no awards if, in the opinion of the Academy Nicholl Fellowships Committee, no entry is of sufficient merit.

Some Last Minute Nicholl Fellowships Entry Suggestions
-- Postmarked by May 1 means that you can place your entry
package in the mail on May 1.
-- "Mail" includes the postal service, UPS, Federal Express
or any other delivery service. Just be certain that your
package is dated. If the service doesn't date packages,
then your entry better arrive in a timely fashion or it
will be disqualified. A Fed Ex overnight arriving on May 15
but "dated" May 1 will not be accepted.
-- If you are going to use Fed Ex, UPS, etc., feel free to use
a slower, cheaper delivery -- UPS ground, the slowest Fed Ex
choice rather than the more expensive Next Day.
-- If you want to hear more quickly that we have received your
entry, attach a self-addressed, stamped postcard and we'll mail
it back. Or you could certify your package, though I've
noticed that the USPS and others are not always as careful as
they should be with those little cards. Otherwise, you'll hear
from us via letter in June that we've received your entry. And
then near August 1 as to whether you've advanced.
-- Make sure that your name, address, phone number, email address
doesn't appear anywhere on your script. Not on the cover, not
on the title page, not on interior pages, not on the last page,
not on the back side of any pages.
-- Using a card stock cover helps but isn't required. If your
script is good enough to be read three times in the first
round, wear and tear may be substantial. A decent cover
lessens the chance of damage.
-- Do use decent brads. Depending on the thickness of your
script, Acco #5 or #6 (1.25" & 1.5") brass metal fasteners are
the best. Thin, wimpy brads tend to fall out of scripts while
in use. The long, silver looping Acco metal fasteners
that accompany the hard Acco covers are also disliked by readers,
as they too tend to fall apart under the pressure of a read.
-- Chicago screws are acceptable. Just don't screw them so tight
that it becomes near impossible to take them apart.
Remember: good scripts need to be copied. Bad ones do not.
-- Do not send your script unbound and/or on plain paper.
Script submissions should be on three-hole paper and bound.
-- Foreign entrants may submit on A-4 paper. Just be certain
that your margins conform to US 8.5" x 11" standards, so that
your script may be copied if it advances. If you maintain a
1.5" to 2.0" bottom margin, you should be fine. (Sorry I
haven't converted to cm.)
-- Don't call or email to ask about your entry. When buried
under several thousand entries arriving in a single week,
we don't have the time to locate individual scripts.
Good luck to everyone.
