Objective
The Slamdance Screenplay Competition is dedicated to discovering and nurturing emerging screenwriters. Since 1997, the competition has established a strong track record for introducing writers to members of the entertainment industry who have gone on to produce, option, and represent submitted work. Like the Film Festival, the Screenplay Competition is a place for new, bold, and raw voices. We are looking for scripts that take risks, refuse compromise, and go places where Hollywood hacks fear to tread.
Recent success stories include Tyler Tice, whose 2018 Grand Prize-winning horror feature Day Shift was released in 2022 as a Netflix original film starring Jamie Foxx. Day Shift became the most watched film in the world during the third week of August 2022. Show More

Every entrant will receive short feedback from one of our readers. It will include a genre suggestion, a logline, and a paragraph outlining the strengths and weaknesses of your screenplay. The goal of the feedback is to provide you with short & sweet constructive criticism of your work.

- A total of $18,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the winners this year.
- The Grand Prize winner will receive $10,000 in cash.
- The winners of the Feature, Horror, TV Pilot, and Short categories will each receive $2,000 in cash.
- The top three screenwriters in each category will receive prize packages that include Festival Passes good for all screenings and parties at the next Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah
- The winning Horror and Feature screenplays will receive $5,000 in legal services from Pierce Law Group, LLP.
- The top three screenwriters in each category will be included in the upcoming Slamdance Film Festival program which is distributed to industry professionals in Park City and year round.
- One entry from the competition will be awarded the Slamdance Screenplay Mentorship Award, consisting of personal mentorship through Slamdance's alumni network and screenwriting consultants. This includes an in-depth coverage report, an action plan for next draft development, further review of subsequent drafts, support in preparing a pitch deck, and best efforts in helping get the finished work produced through Slamdance's alumni network.

Slamdance Screenplay Competition Announces Winners
Respected competition sees forty percent increase in submissions
The winners of the 9th Annual Slamdance Screenplay Competition were announced at a special awards ceremony held at the Writers Guild of America, west. The ten winning scripts were unveiled at the event whose invitees included Slamdance alumni, the competition semi-finalists and members of the WGAw Independent Writers Caucus.
"The quality and quantity of this year's submissions was extraordinary," remarked Competition Director John Stoddard. "It is exciting for me, after four years with the program, to evaluate work of such cinematic depth and clarity."
The competition, long held as a discovery ground for emerging writers, culled the top ten screenplays from over 1,800 submissions. The scripts were judged by numerous tiered-panels of screenwriters, filmmakers and industry professionals. Recent discoveries of the competition have included the winning scripts The Woodsman ('01, Nicole Kassell & Stephen Fechter), and Maria Full of Grace ('01, Joshua Marston).
Festival Director Kathleen McInnis said, "The Slamdance Screenplay Competition showcases what we've known all along: dynamic work is coming from undiscovered places and independent filmmakers are great at uncovering them."
The winning scripts (in order) are:

7th Split Infinity, by Nova Jacobs & John Douglas Sinclair
8th Emma, by Chris Rodgers
9th Claude, by Andrea Kleine
10th Two Gun, by Robert G. Steele
Cash prizes are awarded to the top three places: $3,000, $1,000, $500 respectively. All fourteen writers received screenwriting software and will be read as part of Slamdance's staged reading series, Slamdance On Stage, in March/April 2005. They will also be awarded festival passes for the 2005 Slamdance Film Festival.
Slamdance Film Festival, January 21-28, 2005 is held in Park City, Utah and continues to be programmed and organized by active filmmakers. The festival has established a unique reputation for premiering independent films by first-time directors working with limited budgets. Slamdance Alumni include Memento director Christopher Nolan ('99, Following), Emmy Award Winning directors, the Russo Brothers ('97, Pieces), and Monster's Ball director Marc Forester ('96, Loungers).
